China Changing
25th February 2017
Diana Yeh was recently invited to participate in the Southbank Centre’s international China Changing festival. She spoke about her book The Happy Hsiungs: Performing China and the Struggle for Modernity at the event, ‘Re-imagining a West End hit’, partly inspired by her book, in which UK-based creative hub Moongate Productions embarked on a contemporary reimagining of the play Lady Precious Stream. The event included live performance excerpts – a British-Chinese take on a classic Chinese play – starring Jennifer Lim and David Yip. From the fascinating original production by S I Hsiung that was the talk of London at its premiere in the 1930s, to discussion around its relevance for British audiences today, Diana shared insights into Lady Precious Stream, in discussion with the artists and other cultural commentators.
